Proteinaholic
Published in 2015, Garth Davis’ Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession With Meat Is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It was our accidental introduction to plant-based living. Erin first read it on a whim, having stumbled on it in the library, she thought: “this sounds like an interesting counter-argument, I wonder if there’s anything to it.” In retrospect, she probably wanted some emotional armor to protect us from the inevitable meat displacement that would come with following a doctor’s advice to increase our daily fiber intake.
Erin’s Review
When I read it, I was immediately OUTRAGED!!
I had been lied to this whole time?!? You mean there’s protein in EVERYTHING?!? Plants have plenty of protein? Like it literally doesn’t matter what [non-processed food] I eat, I’ll be fine. Seriously?!?
I was so mad. For weeks! But once I got over the outrage, I sufficiently mourned the hours of unnecessary worry I spent stressing over my protein consumption and vowed to just get on with the rest of my life.
It’s a good read, I recommend it.
Jason’s Take:
What she said, but with less outrage. I came to realize that the amount of protein I was lead to believe we need was more marketing than science. This book opened my eyes to the fact that I had much more flexibility in my daily food choices than I thought, needing much less than “common sense” suggests. Recommend!
